Dan Shea and Hot Rod at Dairy Queen

Dan Shea, 68 of Denton, is a sales rep who loves hot rods and has a fondness for a DQ® Chocolate Dipped Cone.

“For my whole adult life, I’ve been a sales rep covering all or part of Texas,” said Shea. “DQ restaurants have been, and still are, my office away from home.”

Shea always gets a Chocolate Dipped Cone and a medium Dr Pepper®. An avid collector of classic cars and custom hot rods, he usually takes a picture of his treat with one of his hot rods in the background, then posts on his social media.

“Most of my friends think I must be a DQ shareholder, but the company is privately held” he says with a chuckle. “I usually stop in a DQ restaurant every day. The restaurants in Denton don’t even ask for my order. They just ask if I’m getting lunch or a snack.”

Grace enjoying melted TDQ cake

Being a parent can be challenging and when it came time for a single Frisco dad with four children to mark one of his kids’ birthdays, he wanted to do something special. But it didn’t turn out the way Bill Hockensmith planned.

“I will never forget the day my son bought a DQ Cake for his 15-year-old daughter Grace because it was her favorite,” said Grandmother Sharon Hockensmith of McKinney. “When he got home, he put the cake in the refrigerator instead of the freezer. When the big day came, he hauled it out only to realize it was melted flat. We put candles on the rather lop-sided cake and sang "Happy Birthday" anyway. Then we spooned the melted cake into bowls and ate it up. Even melted, it was almost as delicious. Grace especially loved it because she had a good laugh at her dad's expense!”

Mrs. Hockensmith said Grace is a freshman at Frisco Independence and plays on the junior varsity soccer team.

“My husband is a Vietnam veteran, and a retired USAF fighter pilot,” she explained. “His last aircraft was the F-16. I am a retired research manager and former teacher at the University of Texas at San Antonio. We settled in McKinney to be near our four grandchildren: Chase 17, Grace 15, Caitlin 13, and Colton 10, who live in Frisco with their dad.”

Citlali Reyes, 23, has been a Mercedes-Benz service technician at Park Place Motorcars Arlington for four years. But if you were to see her outside of her uniform, you would never guess her profession.

“I’m extra girly,” she proclaims. “I’ve always loved working on cars.  I find it amusing how I love makeup, nails, heels, all the typical girly things so much. On the same note though, I’m a high flagging, efficient technician that has put in hours, blood, sweat, and tears to get where I am currently.”

Citlali was born in Denver but moved to Texas with her parents in 2012. She graduated from Irving’s MacArthur High School in 2017, then completed Universal Technical Institute (UTI) Dallas in 2018.

“My first impression when I came to Park Place was definitely the luxury design in all departments, from sales and service to parts, the client waiting area and our shop.”

When not at work, Citlali manages a small apparel business and is co-owner of a small business in the custom truck scene. “We design shirts, hoodies, caps, stickers and decals. We set up at truck shows in DFW and Houston. We’ve even traveled to Georgia, Colorado and New Mexico.”

She’s also currently in the process of becoming a licensed nail technician.

When asked what advice she would give someone just starting out, she responded, “Advancement is simple. Just keep your long-term goal in clear sight and make small steps towards the big picture.”

Park Place Dealerships was founded in 1987 and employs more than 1,400 members. Park Place Dealership operates two collision centers, an auto auction, and eight full-service dealerships representing luxury brands including Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover and Sprinter Vans. In 2020, Park Place was acquired by Asbury Automotive Group, Inc., a Fortune 500 company headquartered in Duluth, GA. For 75 years, DQ® restaurants in Texas have been friendly, gathering spots where fans enjoy delicious treats and eats and create fond memories. And as DQ restaurants in Texas prepare to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime anniversary, they’re asking fans to share their favorite stories about their neighborhood “Texas Stop Sign.”

Fans can share their favorite stories and photos about any one of their neighborhood DQ locations in Texas by visiting dqtexas.com/anniversary. Whatever their story, DQ restaurants in Texas want to hear it.

  • Maybe it’s congratulating a student’s straight-A report card with a Peanut Buster® Parfait Royal Treat®.
  • Calming first-date jitters with a Chocolate Dipped Cone
  • Quenching a road trip’s hunger pangs with a Hungr-Buster®,
  • Watching a toddler’s first encounter with the world-famous DQ® soft-serve, or
  • Celebrating a win after a high school football game by hoisting a Blizzard® Treat or two, upside down, of course.

“DQ restaurants in Texas have been part of the fabric of the Lone Star State’s communities for 75 amazing years,” says Lou Romanus, CEO of the Texas Dairy Queen Operator’s Council. “Almost everyone I meet tells me about a particular memory they experienced at their favorite DQ restaurant in Texas. The anniversary of the DQ brand in Texas is a wonderful opportunity to share these stories with fans across the Texas.”

Drawing fans to DQ restaurants is the unique, Texas-centric hot-food menu featuring items which can’t be had anywhere outside of Texas, reflecting the Lone Star State’s grand spirit.

There’s the Dude® CLASSIC Chick’n Fried Steak Sandwich and the aforementioned Hungr-Buster®, the BeltBuster® with two quarter-pound patties, and the truly awesome Triple-Buster® (with cheese, please). All are fan favorites.

Let’s not forget the Texas T-Brand Tacos®, the Steak Finger Country Basket® with the best cream gravy anywhere and Chicken and Dumplings, based on a homemade recipe from a DQ restaurant franchise owner’s mom.

But, let’s face it, the full DQ lineup of treats always been the sweetest of reasons to visit the restaurant with friends and family. What secrets were shared while dipping into a sundae or biting into a delicious Dilly® Bar? Did you choose a Dipped Cone or a Blizzard Treat? Whatever brought you to a DQ restaurant over the last 75 years, we want to know about your special moments with the people who made it even more extraordinary.

For generations, DQ restaurants are the places Texans go and they will be the first to say, “That’s what I like about Texas.”
