Plano Fire-Rescue will host an Open House event at five of its fire stations on Sunday to kick off Fire Prevention Week 2013, which is October 6-12 this year.

The Fire Station Open House is a “come and go” event from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the following Plano fire stations:

  • Station 1 located at 1901 K Avenue, Plano 75074
  • Station 4 located at 6000 Roundrock Trail, Plano 75023
  • Station 8 located at 4555 Hedgcoxe Road, Plano 75024
  • Station 10 located at 3450 McDermott Road, Plano 75025
  • Station 12 located at 4101 W. Parker Road, Plano 75093

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that destroyed more than 17,400 structures and killed more than 250 people. On the 40th anniversary of that fire, the Fire Marshals Association of North America (today known as the International Fire Marshals Association) decided the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire should henceforth be observed in a way that would keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention.

The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week is “Prevent Kitchen Fires – Get Cookin’ with Fire Safety!” Visitors to the Open House will be able to tour the fire station, see the fire engines, trucks and ambulances, meet the firefighters and learn about how to prevent kitchen and cooking fires.
