Shannon Kearns-Simmons, chair of the Collin College theatre department, announced the lineup for Collin Theatre Center’s 2012-2013 Season Subscription Series.
This season’s line-up includes the regional premiere of a new documentary play Rust ; Refuge, winner of the Susan Blackburn Prize; the Tony Award-winning musical Cabaret ; and the comedy Lovers & Executioners, winner of the Charles MacArthur Prize for outstanding new play.

Opening the 2012-2013 season is an illuminative, provocative and probing play directed by Gail Cronauer. What happens when we wake up from the American dream? "Rust," a documentary play created by Austin Bunn in collaboration with Working Group Theater, is drawn from hundreds of hours of interviews with the people whose lives were changed when General Motors closed its plant in Wyoming, Mich. in 2008. This exciting regional premiere will be presented in the John Anthony Theatre.
Up next in the Black Box Theatre is the he darkly funny and touching story of a young woman, Amy, forced to care for her younger brother and sister after her parents have abandoned the family and fled to Florida for a vacation from which they will never return.
"Refuge," by Jessica Goldberg, is a profoundly honest and original look at four young lives—lost and unsure of what's ahead, seeking a safe place but uncertain of what safety means. It is a Regional Premiere and the winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for playwriting.
The blockbuster Tony-award winning musical "Cabaret" will be presented in the spring 2013. Performed around the world and turned into a movie starring Liza Manelli, "Cabaret" will be performed at Collin College at the John Anthony Theatre and directed by Brad Baker. Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, "Cabaret" focuses on nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub and revolves around the English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with the naïve young American writer Cliff Bradshaw.
Closing out the 2012-13 season is the comedy "Lovers & Executioners" by John Strand. "The Washington Post" said, “You can't ask for more than an evening in which you laugh like mad, then sit on the edge of your seat wondering how the tale will turn out.”
"Lovers & Executioners" is the tale of an attempted murder and a woman’s revenge concerns a husband who discovers evidence that his wife has been unfaithful. He abandons her on a desert isle, expecting her to die. But she escapes and returns three years later disguised as a man. She manages to have herself appointed judge and promptly brings her husband to trial for the murder of his wife. This comedy is the 1999 winner of the Charles MacArthur Prize for outstanding new play.
