Mosquitos are always an unwelcome guest during the summer, but there are bigger problems to worry about than an itchy bug bite.  Through routine monitoring, the Plano Environmental Health Department has determined that mosquitos carrying West Nile Virus (WNV) are present within the city limits.

There are a few preventative measures, recommended by the City of Plano, that residents can take to keep their family safe, healthy and WNV-free:

  • DRAIN standing water in your yard – old tires, flower pots, clogged rain gutters, bird baths...etc.  Keep swimming pools maintained with water circulating.  These are mosquito breeding sites.

  • DEET is a desirable ingredient in insect repellents.  Follow label instructions and always wear repellent when outdoors.

  • DUSK/DAWN are the times of day you should try to stay indoors.  This is when mosquitoes are most active.

  • DRESS in long sleeves and pants if you are outside between dusk and dawn.  For extra protection, spray clothing with repellent.

The Environmental Health Department is currently identifying "low flow" creeks within Plano.  Once sites are identified, the City will conduct work with the objectives of improving flow and reducing mosquito populations.

In addition, sections of Plano will be sprayed with EPA-approved adulticide.
