Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano - Tower.j Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano

PLANO, TEXAS, MAY 8, 2014 Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano earned an “A” grade for patient safety, according to the latest Hospital Safety Scores from The Leapfrog Group. The organization used publicly available quality and safety measures, as well as leadership commitment to creating a safe environment for patients, to come up with the letter grades.

Nationally, only about a third of the 2,522 hospitals scored were ranked “A.” Twelve Texas Health Resources hospitals received the top grade, including Texas Health Plano.

“Texas Health Plano is proud to be a recipient of an A rating from The Leapfrog Group this measuring period, as well as in the previous four periods,” Stephen Hadzima, M.D., chief medical officer of the hospital, said. “We are one of only 251 hospitals nationwide to achieve this.  We have a commitment to following evidence based medicine, providing high quality care and adhering to safe medical practice.”

The Leapfrog Group bases the Hospital Safety Score on national performance measures from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to produce a single score representing a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.

Individual hospital scores can be viewed at the Hospital Safety Score website at www.hospitalsafetyscore.org.

“The rankings represent our commitment to making patient safety and quality improvement top priorities,” said Linda Gerbig, senior vice president of performance and quality outcomes for Texas Health. “We’re pleased to be recognized on a national level for our efforts.”

A national advocate for transparency and accountability in health care safety and quality, Texas Health on April 30 published its “Quality and Safety Report to the Community: A Transparent Report Card from Texas Health Resources.” Texas Health is the first health system in Texas and one of only a few in the U.S. that is publicly posting quality and safety data based on independent, nationally recognized clinical indicators. Go to www.TexasHealth.org/Quality-Reports to view the report.

PLANO, TEXAS, March 4, 2014 – Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano is proud to recognize Carole Inman, R.N., M.S.N., as the winner of D Magazine’s Excellence in Nursing Award for Orthopedics. Inman is among 80 winners and finalists in North Texas selected from 456 nominations for the annual awards.

“It is a tremendous honor to have one of our nurses recognized for her care and compassion in the workplace,” Raymond Kelly, R.N., M.S.N., chief nursing officer at Texas Health Plano, said. “Carole is an invaluable member at Texas Health Plano and we commend her for years of dedicated service to the patients at our hospital.”

Inman has worked as Texas Health Plano’s joint replacement program coordinator for the past six years and has worked at the hospital for more than 16 years. She was instrumental in helping the joint replacement program earn certification with the Joint Commission and implemented the use of time-release medication that allows patients to stay mobile after surgery, but with less pain.

“One of the biggest issues after joint replacement surgery is trying to keep our patients comfortable,” Inman said. “That is one of our ways of validating the strengths of our program.”

Registered nurses were nominated by hospitals, private practices, physicians and patients in 25 categories. Nominators were asked to consider how the nurse had affected the lives of their patients, the community and the nursing profession in general. Nominations were reviewed by a panel of registered nurses and scores were compiled to select the winners.

In all, ten Texas Health Resources nurses were selected as winners and finalists for the Excellence in Nursing Awards. To see D Magazine’s full list of winners and finalist, click here.

PLANO, TEXAS, February 18, 2014 – Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano is pleased to announce that it has expanded cardiovascular services to include a cardiac rehabilitation program. The physician-supervised program will help cardiac patients recover more quickly, provide education, increase physical fitness and strength, decrease risk of future heart problems and improve overall health and well-being.

“The goal of the new cardiac rehab program at Texas Health Plano is not just to help patients recover from a cardiac episode, but to also give them the tools to live a heart healthy lifestyle for the rest of their lives through education and exercise,” Amir Choudhry, M.D., a cardiologist on the medical staff at Texas Health Plano, and director of the new cardiac rehab program said. “With the techniques that we use, we are able to slow, or maybe even reverse the progression of heart disease.”

The cardiac rehab program at Texas Health Plano is for patients who have had a recent cardiac event, including heart attack, coronary artery disease, angina or heart failure, as well as heart surgery or procedures including angioplasty and stenting.

“With cardiovascular disease being the No. 1 killer of men and women in the U.S., we know that this is a very important service to offer our community,” Stephen Hadzima, M.D., chief medical officer of Texas Health Plano, said. “Cardiac rehabilitation is a proven method that improves patient outcomes, lowers the risk of future heart problems, and helps cardiac patients get back to living their normal life faster, and hopefully healthier.”

According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease claims the lives of one in three Americans each year, which is roughly one death per minute.  Smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diet, lack of physical activity and heredity are some common factors that can lead to a higher risk of heart disease.  To help determine your risk for heart disease, visit www.TexasHealth.org/Heart

The facility is located inside medical office building 2, located at 6300 West Parker Road, Suite G21, Plano, TX. Classes will be offered between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with additional times to be added as needed. For more information about the program, please call 972-981-3114.

Plano residents Andrew and Taylor Simmons, who welcomed healthy baby Sophie Anne at Texas Health Plano on January 27, say they are not surprised the hospital earned the designation.

“I delivered our son here in 2012, and I wouldn’t have considered another location,” Taylor said. “The nurses are so attentive and sweet, I really felt pampered and special while I was here, like I was in a spa.  They have been so compassionate and caring, and the amenities like the Mother’s Gift and the education classes are wonderful.”

When it comes to having babies in Collin County, Texas Health Plano offers assisted reproductive technologies to help women get pregnant, high-risk pregnancy care, a level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and a host of services in between. The hospital also offers a wide array of classes to help prepare parents for the birth and support groups to help new moms once the baby is here.

“We are very pleased to be named the best place to have a baby in Collin County for the third year in row,” said Dawn Nichols, RN, MSN, NEA-BC, director of Women’s and Children’s Services at Texas Health Plano. “The entire healthcare team is dedicated to providing exceptional clinical care with an individualized human touch to produce a top-notch patient experience.”

Texas Health Plano also is one of seven hospitals in Texas designated “Baby Friendly” by the World Health Organization, an honor that recognizes a comprehensive approach to breastfeeding support. The hospital offers breastfeeding classes, a breastfeeding support group run by a lactation consultant, and A Mother’s Gift, a store that sells breastfeeding and other newborn supplies.

In 2013 there were 3,776 babies born at Texas Health Plano:

  • 139 sets of twins
  • 10 sets of triplets
  • 1,919 girls
  • 1,987 boys
  • 494 assisted reproductive procedures
  • 438 admissions to the NICU
  • Most common names were Aiden, Ava, Caden, Emily, Emma, Ethan, Jackson, Liam, Lucas, Madelyn, Madison, Noah and Sophia.
