ACTIVISM FOR CIVIL TREATMENT OF WOMEN, A WHITE RIBBON EVENT FEBRUARY 4

Collin County Council on Family Violence, Junior League of Collin County and Collin College Join Forces to Gather Citizens and Students to Pledge Against Family and Gender Violence

Thursday, February 4, 2016

6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Collin College, Living Legends Conference Center

2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway Plano, TX

Citizens and students will come together at Collin College for the 3rd Annual White Ribbon event, Activism for Civil Treatment of Women, to stand up against family violence, inequality treatment of women and of gender issues on Thursday, February 4, 2016 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Collin College.   Leading the effort is the Junior League of Collin County’s (JLCC), Collin County Council on Family Violence (the Council) and Collin College’s Dignity Initiative to engage the community and Collin College student body as White Ribbon ambassadors.  The White Ribbon Pledge unites men who are willing to take a leading role in the crusade to stand up against family violence.  As an on-going campaign, White Ribbon events are held to bring awareness and education to the issues of family violence and gender issues.

Activism for Civil Treatment of Women promises to be a dynamic experience featuring Dr. Michael Kimmel, one of the world’s leading experts on men and masculinities.  He will present Helping Women by Helping Men.   Kimmel will be joined by Dr. Neil Matkin, District President of Collin College who will recognize those who have been instrumental in the Dignitary Initiative.  Dr. Gary Barnes will lead White Ribbon Pledge.   The Dignity Initiative introduced in 2014 is a Collin College multi-year effort to educate the campus community about five specific elements of gender violence and to empower community members with specific action steps to end the gender-based oppression.    The event includes an expo of nonprofit organizations dedicated to eradicating family violence where students can learn more about community resources and volunteer opportunities.

The Council works as a collaborative team striving to eliminate and respond to family violence through a coordinated, comprehensive effort, which includes education, prevention, intervention, and seamless 24-hour assistance.  Founded in 1999 by the Junior League of Collin County, the Council is a made up of more than sixty community partners representing all areas of the community, including local and state government, law enforcement, education, faith and social services, health care, legal, and workplace organizations.  JLCC and Council members have partnered, pooling resources, building formidable intellectual capital, and pushing forward to unearth best practices in a gallant effort to eradicate family violence in Collin County.

Each year, CCCFV awards two deserving members of North Texas with the Advocate of the Year and the Rebecca Egelston Caso Bridge Builder Award.  The 2015 Advocate of the Year is Gaye Gardner with Victims Relief Fund. She is a longtime member of the Collin County Council on Family Violence and has consistently contributed to the improvement of services dealing with family violence.   The 2015 Rebecca Egelston Caso Bridge Builder of the Year is Tonia Cunningham, Victim Advocate with Frisco Police Department.  Tonia was chosen to be recognized for her ability to look beyond the immediate and view what is in the best interest of the whole.  Her unselfish commitment to address the greater good and her ability to bring together differing views and perspectives in a collaborative way exemplifies the gifts and contributions of a "bridge builder."

RV SALES BACK AT ALL TIME HIGH AS FAMILIES CHOOSE RV TRAVEL LIFE

2015 SOUTHWEST RV SUPERSHOW RETURNS TO MARKET HALL SEPTEMBER 17-20, 2015

Over ten thousand shoppers join in the SOUTHWEST RV SUPERSHOW September 17-20 at Market Hall to experience the latest innovation, technology and advancements in RV life and travel.  More than 400 demonstration units are throughout 350,000 square feet of display space.  The popular toy hauler units will be alongside the traditional fifth wheels, travel trailers, tent trailers, motor homes, motor coaches and camper vans.  Each day of the show offers a variety of seminars on RV ownership and vendors with the latest accessories to enhance RV travels.  Professionals are on-site to provide financing and insurance scenarios.  National manufacturers are represented by regional dealer members of the Texas Recreational Vehicle Association who produces the multiday event.

“We strongly believe the Southwest RV SUPERSHOW is an exceptional opportunity for our dealer network to showcase its best in service, selection and the ultimate offerings of RV life.   The Texas Recreational Vehicle Association is dedicated to providing a platform to educate consumers on the rewarding benefits of RV life from wonderful memories shared as a family to the intrinsic enrichment of travel,” states TRVA Executive Director, Phil Elam.

Texas represented the largest share of RV shipments in the US during 2014 with 9.27% followed by California, Florida, Michigan and Ohio respectively.  Total RV shipments in 2014 to retailers were up 11% over the previous year and the best year since 2006.  This represents the fifth consecutive annual increase and the fourth double digit percentage gain in RV shipments since the end of the last recession. Retail value of all wholesale shipments in 2014 surged more than 18% to an all-time high. These sales figures correlate to the consumer demand and desire for a unique and personal travel experience.

The average age of current owners remains 48 years of age, slightly younger than the median age of U.S. households.  An interesting change is the average age of motor home owners has fallen from 60 years old in the mid-90’s to 48 years of age today.  The fastest growing RV owner age group includes Generation X consumers currently dominating the age group of 35-54 year olds.  Rising sharply following the “Great Recession,” ownership rates increased 11.2% for Generation X.¹ (source RVIA Industry Profile 2014)

Ways to connect family and friends remain a strong attraction to the RV lifestyle as well as the love of the outdoors and adventure travel.  Go RVing Canada released a major new independent Family Vacation Cost Comparison Study. The study found typical family RV vacations to be up to 75 percent less expensive per day than the other types of trips.

The 2015 SOUTHWEST RV SUPERSHOW is an excellent opportunity to explore the options for RV travel all under one rooftop with the latest products and industry leaders available to educate and assist consumers.

12 Collin County Agencies Receive Funding for Community Impact Programs

The Junior League of Collin County (JLCC) Community Grants program supports collaborative programs that have significant impact on the Collin County community and align with the JLCC mission and focus.  This year, twelve Collin County nonprofit organizations were selected to receive funding to support their proposed programs, ranging from providing resources for survivors of family violence, support for low-income families and seniors, education and enrichment programs, children’s health and more.  Agencies were honored at a check presentation and reception on May 26, 2015.

“We were pleased to have received applications for so many innovative programs which serve the needs in Collin County,” said Julie DeHan, Chair of the Community Grants Committee.  “It is wonderful to know that the JLCC has such a strong network of partners serving to improve life in our community.”

The Community Grant selection process is an opportunity to demonstrate the power of collaboration among nonprofit service providers.  JLCC is able to combine financial resources, member volunteer hours and its leadership to support the most critical needs in Collin County.  JLCC provides ongoing support in the form of an advisory role, nonprofit management education, volunteer support and amplifying the awareness for the issue area.

“Community grants enable the Junior League of Collin County to partner with local nonprofit agencies to implement programs which will have significant impact on our community.  The JLCC is proud to partner with these organizations to further our mission in Collin County,” stated Angie Adams Sifferman, President 2014-2015 of the Junior League of Collin County.

Nearly 1,000 women strong, connected by values of service, leadership and respect, the JLCC is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
