Starting September 11, Faith Lutheran School of Plano will offer free classical literature class for adults. Students will read a portion of the literature Faith Lutheran's high school students study.

Faith Lutheran School offers classes for students in preschool through grade 12.  Students in the high school grades experience a wide variety of classical literature during their four years of study at the classical Lutheran school’s Plano campus.

“Since the inception of the high school, we have regularly had adults ask “’when are you going to teach a class for adults wishing to read and study the classical literature your students are reading?’ said Faith Lutheran School high school teacher Timothy Merritt of Plano. “Often parents and other adults have made comments about being jealous of the reading list and learning experience or feeling they missed out when they were in school. Now, we are offering adults the opportunity to study a portion of the same literature that our high school students study each year.

Merritt will be leading adult students through ten books, a small sampling of the more than 100 books that Faith Lutheran School high school students read during their course of study at the school

“The list and reading schedule might seem a bit daunting at first, but it is less than one-third of the reading volume of our high school students and should be manageable,” said Merritt.

Classes meet weekly from 6:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. beginning Monday, September 11 at the Faith Lutheran School campus. Faith Lutheran School is located at 1701 E. Park Blvd. in Plano.

On Thursday, September 14, Heritage Farmstead Museum of Plano is offering a free yoga class and a variety of family-friendly activities from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. as part of the group’s participation in North Texas Giving Day, a one-day, online giving event that benefits thousands of North Texas area non-profits.

On Thursday, September 14, Heritage Farmstead Museum of Plano is offering a free yoga class and a variety of family-friendly activities from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. as part of the group’s participation in North Texas Giving Day, a one-day, online giving event that benefits thousands of North Texas area non-profits.

“Get up and give for North Texas Giving Day, then head to the farm to ¬relax, rejuvenate and enjoy the peaceful beauty of nature on our grounds,” said Heritage Farmstead Museum Director of Development Katherine Strobel.

Toni Farris, owner of Yoga Tree Studio in Plano, will offer a yoga lesson in the meadow at the Farmstead from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Guests are encouraged to bring their own yoga mats.

In addition to a yoga class in the north meadow, guests will enjoy music and have the opportunity to take photos with the Farmstead’s chickens, sheep, donkey and pigs. A variety of food will also be available for purchase including Sugar Mountain snow cones and treats from the Hub Streat food truck.

“Practicing yoga on a historic farm site with animals present is a back-to-basics move that helps you find something deeper,” added Strobel. “And, I’ve heard nature is one the deepest experiences we can have…consider the loveable farm animals a bonus!”

Faith Lutheran School of Plano will host its sixth annual fundraising golf tournament on Friday, October 6 at Heritage Ranch Golf and Country Club.

Faith Lutheran School of Plano will host its sixth annual fundraising golf tournament on Friday, October 6 at Heritage Ranch Golf and Country Club. Heritage Ranch is located at 465 Scenic Ranch Circle in McKinney.

"This golf tournament is an excellent opportunity for us to raise funds for our school, raise awareness about our school and its mission, and for us to simply gather for fun and fellowship together," said Faith Lutheran School Headmaster Rev. Stephen W. Kieser of Wylie. "Proceeds will provide our athletic teams the opportunity to replace old uniforms and buy needed equipment and add to our tuition assistance program for families in need."

On Sunday, August 6, Aubrie Bogle and Nancy Thomas were installed as teachers for Faith Lutheran School during the 8 a.m. worship service at Faith Lutheran Church.

Faith Lutheran School today announced that the school has hired Aubrie Bogle to serve as the school’s third/fourth grade combination class teacher and elementary school Latin teacher. The school has also hired Nancy Thomas to serve as the school’s first grade teacher.   
   
"Faith Lutheran School of Plano has provided a strong presence among private schools in the area for more than 35 years. We are thrilled to add Aubrie and Nancy to our staff, because we know they are dedicated to providing excellent, high-quality, Christ-centered leadership and education for our students," said Faith Lutheran School Headmaster Rev. Bogle has a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political thought with a minor in classical languages and emphasis in Lutheran teaching from Concordia University in Irvine, California. Bogle resides in Plano.
   
Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary and special education from the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. Thomas resides in Plano.

On Friday, May 19, Plano's Heritage Farmstead Museum will host a special education event targeted to homeschool families called “From Seed to Table.”

On Friday, May 19, Plano's Heritage Farmstead Museum will host a special education event targeted to homeschool families called “From Seed to Table.”

“Homeschool families are invited to visit Heritage Farmstead Museum to learn about how a farmer would grow, harvest, and prepare food,” said Heritage Farmstead Museum Executive Director M’Lou Hyttinen.  “Our guests will enjoy activities including plowing and planting seeds, a creek visit, corn and wheat grinding, feeding the chickens, tractor rides, a tour through the Farrell Wilson House, an outdoor cooking demonstration and so much more!”

The Heritage Farmstead Museum homeschool “From Seed to Table” event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, May 19.  Online pre-registration is preferred, but guests may also register at the door. Tickets are $7 each for children in advance ($6 in advance for Farmstead members), $8 each for children at the door on event day ($7 each for Farmstead members), $5 each for adults ($4 each Farmstead members.) Children under two are free.

Guests are invited to bring drinks and sack lunches to have a picnic on the museum grounds.

On Friday, May 5, Plano's Heritage Farmstead Museum will present its 7th annual "Friends of the Farmstead," a fundraising dinner and concert event featuring a farmstead dinner, craft cocktails by Texas Silver Star, many special guests and a concert by country music group Mike and The Moonpies.

"We invite the community to join us for a fun evening featuring dinner and concert on the historic grounds of the Heritage Farmstead Museum," said Heritage Farmstead Museum Executive Director M'Lou Hyttinen.  "All proceeds from this fundraising event support Heritage Farmstead Museum's mission of preserving and celebrating agricultural history and lifestyles in North Texas."

All event tickets include dinner and concert admission. The event’s VIP reception will feature specialty whiskey and vodka cocktails by Texas Silver Star and appetizers.  VIP guests will be given the opportunity to visit and take photos with musicians and celebrities.

The event will take place on Friday, May 5 on the historic grounds of the Heritage Farmstead Museum, which is located at 1900 West 15th Street in Plano.  VIP reception begins at 6:30 p.m., general admission opens at 7:00 p.m., and the dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m.

“The event will also feature rousing games of Chicken Poop Bingo and the chance to win a variety of prices such as the weekend use of a MINI Cooper, Kendra Scott jewelry, private parties, tastings and tours,” added Hyttinen.

The event will also feature the presentation of the “Best Friend of the Farmstead” award. This year’s recipient is Page Thomas.

“The Best Friend of the Farmstead Award honors an individual for their long time support and involvement in the museum over the years.  Page Thomas was very instrumental to the creation of many of our outdoor exhibits and demonstrations,” said Hyttinen.  “He has donated hundreds of artifacts and objects to the museum over the years including blacksmithing tools, carriages and wagons and many educational objects used in our school tours.  We always say there is not an area of the museum that Page Thomas has not touched in some way.  He has always been extremely passionate about visitors ‘experiencing’ the past through hands on demonstrations such as blacksmithing, carriage rides and outdoor cooking.”

Faith Lutheran Church of Plano today announced the church's Holy Week and Easter schedule of special services.

“Temptations and trials are a reality in our lives.  During Lent, we repent of our sins, and we also live in God’s forgiveness brought about by the blood of our Savior.  Lent prepares us not only for Good Friday, but also for Easter,” said Faith Lutheran Church of Plano senior pastor Rev. James Woelmer of Lucas.  “Join us during our Lenten journey as we are directed to the holy sufferings and death of our Lord Jesus Christ so that we may come to Easter with glad hearts keeping the feast with sincerity and truth.”

Maundy Thursday Service, Thursday, April 13 at 7:00 p.m.

Tenebrae (Latin for "shadows" or "darkness") is a Christian religious service celebrated on the evening before or early morning of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, which are the last three days of Holy Week. The distinctive ceremony of Tenebrae is the gradual extinguishing of candles while a series of readings and psalms is chanted or recited.

Easter Vigil Service - Saturday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Easter Vigil is the first celebration of the resurrection of Christ from the dead (much like Christmas Eve is the first celebration of Christmas). The Easter Vigil marks the final day of the sacred Triduum (Holy/Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and the Vigil of Easter). Historically, the Easter Vigil began around the middle of the second century. The people of God would hold vigil, which means “keep watch,” through the night in expectation of Christ’s return.

The Easter Vigil service is comprised of six parts: Light, Readings, Holy Baptism, Prayer, the Word and the Sacrament. The paschal candle is lit and it leads the procession into church. The historic Exsultet or Easter proclamation is sung and the Easter acclamation: “Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!” is first spoken. The service begins in darkness and it ends in light.

“Young at Heart: 55+ Exceeding the Limit” is a Heritage Farmstead Museum educational program designed specifically for seniors

Plano's Heritage Farmstead Museum is often filled with small children on school field trips or young families enjoying the wonders of the four-acre historic site, which is nestled in the center of the city.  But folks at the Farmstead are targeting a slightly different demographic with the organization's senior-focused program "Young at Heart: 55+ Exceeding the Limit".

“Young at Heart: 55+ Exceeding the Limit” is a Heritage Farmstead Museum educational program designed specifically for seniors. Program presentations, conducted on targeted days once per each from 10:00 a.m. – noon, will feature a variety of topics from vegetable gardening, music, history and much more.

"This exciting, popular program allows all of us at the Heritage Farmstead Museum to reach out to another sector of our community to provide educational opportunities, fellowship and fun," said Heritage Farmstead Museum Director of Development Kathy Strobel.
Upcoming Young at Heart: 55+ Exceeding the Limit programs include:

•    April 10: Enjoy an informative, educational tour of Heritage Farmstead Museum grounds featuring a Mammoth Jack donkey, sorghum mill, Victorian gardens, chickens, antique vehicles and more.
•    May 8: All About Bees: a speaker from the Texas Beekeeper’s Guild will give an informative presentation about bees, related topics and other useful information.
•    June 12: This event will feature a hammer dulcimer concert by Susan McCarter as well as a guided tour of Heritage Farmstead’s Ammie Wilson House.
•    July 10: Beth and Mark Ayers will present a Victorian Magic Lantern Show, a series of projected images from hand-painted panes of glass that the couple have been collecting for years.  This program will be held in the Young House at Heritage Farmstead.
•    August 14: Join Heritage Farmstead for a morning of barn-raisin’, boot stompin’ fun at a Banjo Band Sing-A-Long. This one-of-a-kind event is not to be missed!
•    September 11: Enjoy an old fashioned ice cream social followed by a concert by acclaimed music group Men of Note. This program will begin at 11:30 a.m. instead of 10 a.m.
•    October 9: Don Gates will give a demonstration of a traditional chuck wagon lunch. Samples of his unique, tasty fare will be provided. Hear the history of the chuck wagon and of the cattle drives on Texans past while sitting by an open camp fire.

Pre-registration for each class is $6.00 for non-members and $5.00 for Heritage Farmstead Museum members. Pre-registration deadline is midnight the Thursday prior to each program, but walk up registration is also permitted if there is space available.

The event features an egg hunt including more than 5,000 eggs filled with candy and prizes for children ages eight and under, but guests of all ages will delight in the joys of spring on the Blackland Prairie with the shearing of the Farmstead's sheep and a variety of other family-friendly activities.

On Saturday, April 15, Plano's Heritage Farmstead Museum will host its annual Victorian Eggstravaganza and Spring Festival.  The event features an egg hunt including more than 5,000 eggs filled with candy and prizes for children ages eight and under, but guests of all ages will delight in the joys of spring on the Blackland Prairie with the shearing of the Farmstead's sheep and a variety of other family-friendly activities.

The event will also include hands-on demonstrations, historic exhibits, vintage wagon rides, concessions, face painting, children’s crafts, house tours, exhibits, historical activities and more.

"Grab your Easter basket and join us for a fun day on the Farmstead," said Heritage Farmstead Museum Executive Director M'Lou Hyttinen. “Take a step back in time with us at this unique, springtime event!”

One informative event demonstration, entitled 'Sheep to Shawl,' will detail the work of pioneer North Texas farmers on the Blackland Prairie who labored hard with their flocks. Farmstead staff and volunteers will showcase the art of sheep shearing, as well as weaving, skirting, washing, dying and spinning wool.

The Victorian Eggstravaganza and Spring Festival event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Egg hunts for children four and under start at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Egg hunts for children ages five to eight years start at 11:00 a.m. and noon.  Children are encouraged to bring their own Easter baskets.  Egg hunts fill up on a first-come, first-served basis.  Once early times are full spots for the second egg hunts will be filled.

The Dallas Costumers Guild will present historical demonstrations throughout the day including a women's sewing circle.

“They will be on hand to show basic knitting skills and traditional sewing stitches. All will be dressed in period costume as they stroll throughout the museum grounds,” added Hyttinen.

During the event the Heritage Farmstead Museum’s Ammie Wilson House will feature an Alice in Wonderland exhibit showcasing actors from Plano Children’s Theater dressed as Alice, the Mad Hatter and other characters from the classic children’s book. The Victorian home will be open throughout the event.

Online pre-registration is encouraged but not necessary. However, guests receive a discount for early registration. Online pre-registration tickets are $6 each, or tickets are $8 at the door on the day of the event. Heritage Farmstead Museum members may purchase pre-registration tickets for $5 each or obtain tickets at the door for $6 each.

Raising Cane’s will provided free lemonade and free sweet tea at the event.
