Capital One Hosts Day of Financial Literacy with Tech-Savvy Game

Capital One recently helped students to learn about financial literacy through the combination of sports and video games. Grouped into “football teams,” seventh and eighth graders at Bowman Middle School in Plano tackled the Financial Football Game where they were able to face financial literacy issues head-on, all on an iPad.

Financial Football is a video game designed to teach middle and high school students important financial skills and knowledge that is critical in real-world scenarios such as billing, credit and fraud information. Originally developed by Visa to circumvent the perception of finance as dull, the multiple-choice game is complete with touchdowns, first downs and sometimes fumbles. Students can even choose offensive and defensive plays based on the difficulty level of each question.

“Financial Football is a great way for the younger generation to become engaged and interested in their own financial futures,” said Capital One North Texas/Collin County and Oklahoma Market President David Haufler. “The knowledge gained from this activity provides a lifelong skillset that will be crucial to them before they know it.”

Students at Bowman Middle School did not come unprepared, having recently completed a “training day” with Capital One executives to help prepare them for the types of questions they would encounter during the big game. Capital One volunteers were present at the school to assist in training to guide students on their way to a team victory and to financial literacy.

Through an approach called Investing for Good, Capital One coordinates business resources with a variety of community development and support for local programs and nonprofit organizations. Capital One is committed to supporting education initiatives such as Financial Football that create a positive impact on local communities.

The training, held on Capital One’s Plano Campus, focused on the importance of setting career goals and other similar career-based topics.

The training featured Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere and representatives from Capital One, the Hendrick Scholarship Foundation, the city of Plano and other local businesses. Sessions helped to prepare the students for entering the workforce by focusing on resume building, interviewing, business communication, professional dress and etiquette, financial literacy and career choices. Keynote speakers also shared their perspectives on leadership, teamwork, career exploration, how to stand out from workforce competition and much more.

“It was a wonderful experience to speak to these students and offer advice that I wish I had when I was their age,” said David Haufler, Capital One North Texas/Collin County and Oklahoma market president. “It is our hope that with this training program, young people will become invested in their careers at an early age, and get a head start on long-term career objectives.”

The eight-week program is intended to build the vision and skills needed to successfully transition into college and will provide real-world experience to inspire ambitious career goals.

Local Family of Five Receives Dream Home

On Monday, April 7, the Tuffa family of Plano, Texas received the gift of a home from Capital One and Habitat for Humanity of South Collin County (SCC). Nearly 300 Capital One associates joined forces with the national nonprofit to volunteer thousands of hours to build the home that was presented to the family of five.

The family’s youngest son, Caleb, suffers from a health condition called Prader Willi that affects most of his body and requires constant care by his parents and nurses. The Tuffa’s previous two-bedroom apartment was not big enough to hold the number of caretakers necessary to provide for Caleb and made it difficult to complete daily tasks. Now, in the new four-bedroom house, there is room to spare.

“Capital One associates care deeply about this community,” said Capital One North Texas/Collin County and Oklahoma Market President David Haufler. “They want to see their community thrive, and they want to be an integral part of its success year-round. And so when they have the opportunity to support the many Capital One programs and initiatives that advance education, financial literacy, affordable housing, and small business and workforce development in Collin County, they seize it.”

Through an approach called Investing for Good, Capital One coordinates business resources with a variety of community development and support for local programs and nonprofit organizations.

Capital One is committed to supporting organizations such as Habitat for Humanity that create a positive impact on local communities and the people and businesses in them. Through its “Home Loans Has Heart” program, launched in September 2013, Capital One made a $70,000 commitment to Habitat for Humanity-SCC. Along with the investment of the home build, Capital One has provided quarterly workshops on homebuyer literacy and various other financial literacy topics.

The internships will be part of the inaugural Plano Mayor’s Summer Internship program, the first program of its kind available to Plano students.

Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere, in partnership with the Plano Independent School District, Capital One, and the Hendrick Scholarship Foundation, announced the program during a March 17 press conference. The internship program combines Plano’s vibrant business community and nationally recognized school district by connecting the city’s motivated high school students with exceptional local companies and organizations.

Capital One, the presenting sponsor of the program, hosted the press conference at its Plano campus.

“At Capital One, we believe the mayor’s summer internship program can have a profoundly positive impact on local youth, giving them a unique perspective on how businesses and other organizations work, and providing tools, knowledge and encouragement to help students in the area pursue dreams and reach for levels of achievement they might not have considered before participating in the program,” said David Haufler, Capital One’s Collin/County/North Texas Market President.

A major supporter of nonprofits that are addressing critical areas of need in Plano, Capital One has committed $12,000 to fund internships for four separate nonprofits that serve the East Plano population. The four nonprofits will be selected through an application process. The internships will be eight weeks, starting on June 16 and ending on Aug. 8. Each of the interns will work between 30 and 40 hours a week.

“Nonprofits do a tremendous amount of good for Plano residents and businesses, By funding these internships Capital One is pleased to provide four area nonprofits with added resources for summer programming and capacity,” said Haufler. “At the same time, the students who serve as summer interns at these four nonprofits will gain real-world job experience and learn how effectively managed organizations operate. Plus they’ll be paid for their work during the eight-week internship.”

In April, grants of $3,000 will be awarded by Capital One to four nonprofits. Applications for the grants can be obtained at www.cybergrants.com/capitalone/interngrant. Eligible nonprofits must complete and return the application by Wednesday, April 16.
