Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper

Bring the family for a fun feast and fellowship as well as games

St. Andrew United Methodist Church invites the community to its annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, Tuesday, February 17, 2014, from 6 – 7:30 in Smith Worship Center, 5801 W. Plano Parkway, Plano, Texas 75093. Supper is $3 per person with a family maximum of $10.  Register online at standrewumc.org.  The evening includes pancakes with all the toppings, fellowship, and games for kids.

“Celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, is the last day before the period which Christians call Lent,” said Rev. Robert Hasley, senior pastor, St. Andrew UMC. “Lent is a time to prepare for Easter through prayer, repentance, and self-denial.  Some Christians do this though abstinence or giving things up so Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and eat foods that people may abstain from in Lent.  It is a tradition on this day to eat pancakes, and in the last few years, it has become a fun tradition for families to celebrate this occasion at St. Andrew.”

The name Shrove comes from the old word "shrive" which means to confess. On Shrove Tuesday, in the Middle Ages, people used to confess their sins so that they were forgiven before the season of Lent began.

Additionally, families are invited to return the following day, February 18, for St. Andrew’s Ash Wednesday Worship Service at 7 p.m., in the sanctuary to begin the season of Lent.
