The Storehouse of Collin County Asks Community to Get up and Give on North Texas Giving Day!

A retired couple, Shirley, 74, and Bob, 77, never imagined they would need the services of a food pantry. They moved to Texas from Iowa in 2016 at the request of their daughters who wanted their aging parents to be closer to them. The couple agreed that moving closer to family would be a good idea.  Bob had worked his whole life in retail and wholesale, but when the couple moved to Texas, they transitioned to a fixed income and experienced some unexpected expenses.  They had car problems and both of them needed some dental work.  Before they knew it, they had a big credit card bill they could not pay.

“We prayed about it and soon after, we learned about the Seven Loaves Food Pantry, a program of The Storehouse of Collin County,” said Shirley. The couple was not too proud to seek help and found a very warm and welcoming environment upon their first visit.

“What a difference it made!” added Shirley. “We learned how to change our way of living and cook differently with the wonderful items we received. When I think back to my parents and when they were struggling, there was nowhere for them to go.  We are so very blessed to come to Seven Loaves and receive everything we need during this difficult time in our lives.”

In addition to Seven Loaves Food Pantry, which provides healthy food and pantry staples to an average of 900 families per month, The Storehouse of Collin County includes Joseph’s Coat, a clothing closet, which provides an average of 4,000 garments a month, and Project Hope, which helps women in crisis tackle the hardships in life by providing mentors, advocates and skill training.

“As the population of North Texas continues to grow, so does the rate of poverty,” said Carolyn Getridge, interim executive director, The Storehouse of Collin County. “There are 130,000 people in Collin County alone in need of help with basic necessities. The Storehouse is designed to give clients the opportunity for both short-term assistance and long-term transformation.”

“We have set a goal of $50,000 for North Texas Giving Day and hope the community will get up and give on September 14,” added Getridge.  “Please help The Storehouse of Collin County continue to provide residents with the hope that change is possible!”
