The Tribute Re-Opens Golf Course After $1 Million Makeover

The Tribute Golf Links & Guest House, located at the Tribute Lakeside Golf & Resort Community in The Colony, Texas, has re-opened its public golf course and clubhouse after a $1 million makeover.

“This renovation raises the bar on being the best in the Metroplex for public golf and hospitality,” said Cliff Coffelt, The Tribute Golf Club PGA General Manager.  “The main renovation involved converting and upgrading the greens and the club house of this 18-year old course. We basically put in new greens from the gravel layer up.  I’m very excited to grow the new greens in and to offer a premier putting surface at The Tribute for all of our guests to enjoy.”

The Tribute brought in Tripp Davis, the Tribute’s original golf course architect, to help with the final floating of the greens surface and allow for the best putting surface possible.

“I originally wanted Bermuda greens 18 years ago,” said Davis.  “But at that time these ‘new’ Bermuda greens were untested and everyone else wanted Bent Grass. I like that the Bermuda will play a bit firmer, withstand traffic better and overall provide a better playing surface year round. It will also be more ‘authentic’ in playing quality, similar to what you see in Scotland.”

The process used for the greens conversion is called a “Till” version.  Coffelt said this high-tech method involved stripping the existing Bent Grass and then roto tilling the greens mix profile in two directions at six to eight inch depths. By breaking up any layering that has developed over the years, it allows the existing organic matter to be blended into the cleaner mix lower down resulting in a brand new growing base full of healthy organic matter, and then floating a rough of Ultradwarf Bermudagrass.

The Guest House refresh included painting the majority of the exterior and interior of the clubhouse, adding new carpet to gathering spaces and adding meeting space to offer smaller groups an opportunity for private meetings and parties. The Tribute’s  restaurant space was moved to the former Pro Sop, updated and officially re-named “Ye Olde Pro Shop” in keeping with the Scottish feel.  A new menu was also unveiled with a signature Lobster Roll Sandwich.

The Tribute will be also be reintroducing its “Player’s Club” program, an affordable monthly membership for the whole family with discounted playing privileges and $15 cart fees after 1 pm. For more information on programs and schedules, go to www.thetributegc.com.
