John Paul II High School Senior Commits to Iowa State

JPIIHS Senior basketball player Claire Ricketts has signed with Iowa State University to play Division I basketball. Ricketts chose Iowa State over Texas Tech, Kansas State, Purdue, Missouri and Northwestern, among others.

Ricketts has been a four-year member of the varsity team at John Paul II High School, and helped lead her team to three consecutive TAPPS Final Fours before winning the school’s first TAPPS state championship last March. “Claire was very instrumental in our success last year,” said coach Mike Martin. “She’s one of the area’s best post players and will adapt very well to Iowa State’s style of ball.” Ricketts also plays AAU for Texas Fire Black under coach Marty Murphy.

She was named TAPPS District 1-5A Newcomer of the Year as a freshman, and was 1st Team All District as a sophomore and junior. She was 2nd Team All State as a sophomore, and as a junior garnered awards for 1st Team All State, TABC 1st Team All State, and 1st Team All Tournament. Ricketts chose Iowa State for the close-knit atmosphere. “The people are great; not just in the university, but in the community as well,” said Ricketts. “I believe the basketball program is the best fit for me and my talents. The coaching staff really cares deeply for their players and I feel as though the coaches will push me to excel everyday not only on the court but off it as well.”

Ricketts excels off the court as well. She’s a member of the National Honor Society, a JPIIHS Ambassador, part of the Recruitment Leadership Council, a Cardinal Scholar, member of the Pro-Life Club and the Latin Club, as well as Vice President of the Students Against Destructive Decisions club. She was 1st Team All State Academic in TAPPS as well.
