A Red Letter Day for Woodrow
At 1 pm on October 26, DISD officials and local VIPs will cut the ribbon to Woodrow’s newest addition, as part of the school‘s 90th Anniversary celebration. The 50,000 square foot, three story building cost about $25 million.
The showcase is a new 1,800 seat competition gym which can host district and playoff games. There are extensive locker, offices, weight and mat rooms. This reinforced section is also built as a storm shelter.
The gym replaces the old “boys gym“, which opened at Woodrow’s 25th Anniversary in 1953-54.
The state champion Woodrow Wilson Robocats will have a 3,000 square foot robotics gym modeled on SMU’s facility. It will be part of a STEM suite which covers the entire third floor leading to science labs in the 2014 addition.
The fast-growing band and orchestra will get a new hall with extensive practice rooms and storage areas. The band has grown to about 150 students and last week they earned straight ones at UIL competition.
There will also be additional arts and ceramics studios and classrooms. Woodrow offers AP and IB art classes, including art history.
The “horseshoe” entrance features a large lobby with new red and gray lounge furnishings and Woodrow’s third elevator. It connects to a landscaped court yard between the newer sections of the school and the 1928 historic original building.
At 1:30 pm, after the ribbon cutting, championship athletes, teams and coaches will be reunited and recognized in a pep rally program called “90 Years of Woodrow Athletics”. This will be the first event held in the gigantic new gym.
