In the locker room following the 5A State Volleyball Championship game, seniors Katie Staiger and Brooke Gajdica challenged the other girls to remain a close-knit family. “This was a special season,” said Coach Becky O’Neal. “These girls love the game of volleyball, but more importantly they love each other and they love the Lord.”

The Lady Lions Varsity Volleyball team came in second in state this season and, along the way, achieved some very impressive records. They finished the district season as co-district champions as the first seed. Much of the team received district honors.

Haley Wolken, received first team all district honors and second team all state. First team all district and first team all state as well as Defensive Player of the Year was awarded to Ashley Morgan for her outstanding play. Senior Katie Staiger also received first team all district and all state honors and was unanimously voted as the district’s Most Valuable Player. Christina Phillips was awarded Honorable Mention in the district for her performance as a right side attacker.  Second team honors went to Brooke Gajdica for the libero position, as well as Courtney Novak for her position as setter. Additionally, Coach O’Neal was awarded the District Coach of the Year!

The team ends the season with an overall record of 37-3. “The girls had a goal at the beginning of the season to make it to state and were able to accomplish that goal in an exciting fashion,” said Coach O’Neal.
