Otto Middle School just gained a new collection of books thanks to the creative writing ability of Anthony Vu. The middle schooler has won Explore Horizon’s 2019 Writers’ Award competition and in addition to receiving a Kindle Fire HD, his school will receive $500 worth of books from Explore Horizons.  

Competing against other North Texas students 14 years-old and younger, Vu had to create a memorable story on the theme of A Chance to Change the World. Runners-up in this year’s competition are Sparsh Kamdar and Vir Gandhi from Frisco ISD.

“Each year, students across DFW showcase their creative abilities for our contest, and each year we continue to be amazed by their stories,” said Tara Mills head of curriculum at Explore Horizons. “All of the winners did a great job addressing this year’s theme within their stories.”

North Texas children’s author Murray Richter, the author of Lucky Rocks, was this year’s judge.

“I can’t even begin to share how much fun I had being a part of Explore Horizon’s 2019 Writers’ Awards contest,” said Richter. “Each entry I read took a unique approach to the theme and displayed an incredible amount of creativity and talent. This contest is the perfect outlet to let children showcase their writing abilities.”

The Explore Horizons Writers’ Award is an annual competition open to all North Texas students 14 years-old and younger. The program challenges students to create an original story of up to 500 words using a selected theme.
