Medical City Plano Recognized for Promoting Breastfeeding

Redesignation of Texas Ten Step improves the health of mothers and newborns

PLANOMedical City Plano continues to be a leader in Collin County for improving the health of newborns by earning the Texas Ten Step designation from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission for the ninth time.

Developed in collaboration with the Texas Hospital Association, the Texas Ten Step program was designed to improve maternity care practices in birthing facilities and improve health outcomes for lactating women and their infants through evidence-based practices. Maintaining designation demonstrates to physicians, prospective patients and the community, Medical City Plano’s dedication to offer supportive care to breastfeeding mothers. Redesignation is required every two years.

“Redesignation as a Texas Ten Step facility for the past nine years reflects our commitment to giving our smallest patients the best nutritional start in life through their mother’s milk,“ says Damita Williams, Ed.D., MSN, RN, CPN, CENP, chief nursing officer for Medical City Plano. “This is another reason why expectant mothers turn to Medical City Plano as the destination of choice for delivering their precious babies.”

Texas Ten Step facilities are required to address 85 percent of the Ten Steps to be identified as a Texas-Mother Friendly Worksite, regularly evaluate its breastfeeding policies, maternity care practices and educates all healthcare givers routinely with evidence-based courses.
