Researchers at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas are seeking pregnant women for a pilot study of the effectiveness of an oral appliance to improve sleep quality, breathing and snoring.

“Snoring can be a serious problem that can affect your health and that of your child,” said Zohre German, clinical research coordinator in biomedical sciences. “It’s associated with poor quality sleep, high blood pressure, heart disease, preeclampsia and preterm delivery.”

The five-week study requires regular visits to A&M Dentistry at 3302 Gaston Ave. The study includes home sleep tests three times and wearing an oral appliance at night for four weeks.

Each participant will receive $150 and can keep the custom-fitted oral appliance at the end of the study.

Each participant must be pregnant, at least 18 years old, snore and have adequate dental health to wear an oral appliance.

Principal investigators are Drs. Emet Schneiderman, adjunct research professor in biomedical sciences, and Preetam Schramm, psychologist and sleep scientist in biomedical sciences. The study is funded by Children’s Airway First Foundation.
