McKinney Repertory Theatre (MRT) is stepping up to the plate this fall with the North Texas premiere of National Pastime, a fast-paced musical comedy filled with toe-tapping numbers, romance, and plenty of laughs. Written by Tony Sportiello (book) and Al Tapper (music & lyrics) of AMT, the show runs October 3–4, 10–11, and 17–18, 2025, at the Courtroom Theater in the McKinney Performing Arts Center (MPAC).
Set in Depression-era Iowa, National Pastime tells the story of WZBQ Radio, a small-town station on the brink of collapse. In a desperate attempt to save it, station manager Barry Landis concocts a bold idea: broadcast games for a fictional, undefeated baseball team, the Baker City Cougars. To everyone’s surprise, the hoax takes off, sparking town-wide excitement, unexpected fame, and a few complicated romantic twists along the way.
Described as a throwback to the golden age of radio and classic American musicals, the show blends nostalgic charm with themes of creativity, teamwork, and perseverance. “It’s a story about baseball, community, and hope, during a time when people needed it most,” said director Aaron Adair. “And of course, it’s a lot of fun.”
This production also highlights MRT’s dedication to engaging the next generation of theatergoers. Thanks to a generous grant from H-E-B, all students — middle school through college — can attend National Pastime for free. By weaving in history, music, and America’s favorite pastime, the show offers students a unique way to connect with both the arts and the cultural spirit of the 1930s.
The North Texas premiere of National Pastime marks the second-to-last show in MRT’s 2025 season before MPAC undergoes major renovations beginning in January 2026. MRT will continue presenting smaller collaborative programs during the renovation and plans to return to the refreshed Courtroom Theater with its beloved holiday tradition, A Christmas Carol, in late 2026.
