More Than 1,000 Race to OutRun Homelessness at Plano’s LifePoint Church

April 8, 2014 (Plano, TX) - More than 1,000 people joined the race against homelessness in Collin County during LifePoint Church’s OutRun Homelessness event March 22.  The 5K and Fun Run raised funds to fight homelessness in Collin County and continue LifePoint’s mission of tackling the issue.

The Saturday morning race saw more than 550 participants in the 5K and more than 450 in the Fun Run. The total funds raised will be announced at a LifePoint service on May 4th when representatives from several Collin County organizations, including City House, Emily’s Place, Family Promise, God’s Food Pantry, Hope’s Door, Samaritan Inn and Shiloh Place, will return to the church to receive the donations. Those representatives were also at the race, educating the public about the increase in homelessness in Collin County. Since 2010, the county has seen a 138 percent increase in those counted as homeless. In 2013, 36 percent of homeless individuals counted were children.

“We are truly grateful for the partnership we have with LifePoint, and for their support of our mission and the families we serve,” said Jackie Cooke, Family Promise director.  “This fight against homelessness is a community effort and we appreciate what they have done to bring so many people together in the fight.”

“We were excited that so many runners,  both members of the church and non-members, participated in our first race, and in doing so, acknowledged that homelessness is an issue in our community and worked together to address it,” said Lead Pastor George Feiser.  “We look forward to celebrating again when we distribute funds that will help so many, as well as continue our efforts in this area of need.”

The OutRun Homelessness event is just one component of the church’s effort to fight homelessness locally. LifePoint staff and members “adopted” a local homeless family in 2013 with the help of Collin County’s Family Promise and have assisted them with housing, transportation, employment and other basic living necessities for several months. When that family “graduates” from the program this summer, the church will adopt another local homeless family, and then share their process with other churches in Collin County in order to solve this problem.
