John Paul II High School has announced its varsity hockey coach for the 2014-2015 school year. Jeff Mewett will coach the team as the school plays its first varsity season in the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League. President Thomas W. Poore is pleased to have Coach Mewett lead the Cardinal hockey team in its inaugural varsity season. “Coach Mewett brings experience, dedication and leadership in developing players’ skills,” said President Poore. “But equally important, he molds them into leaders who will make a difference in the world.”

Coach Mewett, a Dallas native, has been the head coach of the Plano Senior High varsity hockey team since 2007, but is excited about switching to a Catholic school. “What drew me to the school was not only the great hockey players coming up through JPIIHS, but also what the school can provide versus the traditional public school setting,” said Mewett. “The school is a close-knit community, and I look forward to building a comprehensive hockey program within this community.”

Coach Mewett has also coached in the Alliance Youth Hockey Association as well as the Dallas Hawks Hockey Club and the Dallas Titans Hockey Club. In 2013-2014, he coached the Dallas Penguins U16 team to a perfect 29-0 league record, which led to a League Championship and State Championship. The team qualified for the USA Hockey National Tournament and placed third in the nation.

Coach Mewett moved to Canada when he was 14, where he played hockey for his high school and graduated from Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Saskatchewan. He continued his playing career with the Junior A Hounds while attending the University of Regina. “I’m very pleased with our hiring of Coach Jeff Mewett,” said Rich Gaffney, Athletic Director at JPIIHS. “He has an excellent coaching background having been the Plano High School coach for several years and coaching a very successful club team as well.  Jeff has excellent coaching knowledge and will be a quality role model for our program as we move into varsity play next season.”

John Paul II High School started its hockey program in 2012. The JV Gold team recently won 1st place in the JV division of the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League. 2014-2015 will be the inaugural year the school fields a varsity program.  “I intend to build a team that will be dedicated to our team, committed to development, hard work and discipline,” said Mewett. “Those are keys to having success at the varsity level.”
