Faith Lutheran School of Plano third and fourth grade classes recently enjoyed an informative presentation on robotics given by Doug Paradis, who is the grandfather of a Faith Lutheran School fifth grade student and an industry expert.

Students learned key vocabulary such at 'autonomous' and 'gyroscopic action' and saw robotics that demonstrated each concept.

"Students saw a light-seeking robot that avoided shadow and scurried into the light," explained Faith Lutheran School teacher Cheryl Wildauer of Allen.  "Another robot followed a complicated path of curving and twisting lines. There was even a balancing robot, which Paradis commented 'had an attitude' when it occasionally beeped while carrying out its assigned task."

Paradis also demonstrated a robot that he had taught to solve a Rubik's cube.

Students learned that there are many good reasons to have robots: robots can do good work over and over without getting tired, they do work (sometimes quite dangerous) that no one else wants to do, and they do work faster and make it easier.

"Another reason to have robots is that they are just plain fun!" explained Paradis.

Even though he has much experience with robots, Paradis admitted that he enjoys his robotics hobby primarily for the pure fun of it.

At the conclusion of the presentation, a video of a robotics competition was shown to students.  Paradis encourage students to learn more about robots and to perhaps also consider building one themselves.
