This summer, Plano's Courtyard theater will feature a special and unique presentation geared toward area children, families and educators...a vignette show titled "The Lion of Texas: The Story of Sam Houston," starring a Gainesville-based Texan who also happens to be named Sam Houston.

The performance is part of a "The Story of Sam Houston" summer camp event presented by Sam Houston and The Plano Conservancy for Historic Preservation, Inc.  On select dates this summer, the theater will host the Sam Houston presentation, the Interurban Railway Museum will be open for special tours for campers and additional enrichment activities will take place in adjacent Haggard Park in historic downtown Plano.

Homeschool groups, summer care classes and other groups are welcome at the event, but the event is also open to families, educators and others as well.

"We are pleased to partner with 'The Lion of Texas' to present this unique educational opportunity for children, families and educators in Plano and beyond," said Russ Kissick, co-director of The Plano Conservancy for Historic Preservation, Inc, the group that manages Plano's Interurban Railway Museum. "We are offering a day full of educational experiences, complete with a theater performance, museum visit and much more.  Guests will have an opportunity to experience Sam Houston's engaging performance, and to ask questions about Sam Houston’s life and about Texas. All answers and information will be presented from Sam Houston's unique point of view."

"The Lion of Texas - the Story of Sam Houston” is a 40 minute theatrical performance where Houston  dresses in period costume and tells his story through speech and audio and visual effects of the gripping tale of the Texas revolution.

"Come and learn the story of Sam Houston and the experience the drama of the Texas Revolution," said Houston.  "Then join us at the Interurban Railway Museum to learn about the interurban rail system, tour a rail car, learn about area history and explore the museum's electricity room.  We'll also have prizes and fun experiences in Haggard Park as well.  This program is all about providing a fun and educational experience for all ages.  Children love to see history come alive!"

"The Story of Sam Houston" summer camp experience will take place from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. June 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23 and 24; July 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 27, 30 and 31 and August 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14.
