U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson Receives CCBA Leadership Award

On Wednesday, Dec. 7, the Collin County Business Alliance (CCBA) honored U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson with the 2016 Collin County Leadership award for his leadership and service to the region. He received the award via video message at CCBA’s fifth anniversary luncheon, which focused on globalization and international economic development.

Johnson is the fifth recipient of this award. Previous winners include: Florence Shapiro, former Plano mayor and state senator; Dr. Carey Israel, former Collin College president; Ed Heffernan, president and CEO of Alliance Data; and Donnie Nelson, general manager of the Dallas Mavericks and founder of the Texas Legends.

“I want to thank you for the honor of being chosen for this year’s Leadership Award,” Johnson said. “This award is made all the more special because it comes from a dynamic group of people who have helped build the community we share.  It has been a pleasure to partner with you on important issues for Collin County.”

Johnson has served in congress representing the Collin County area since 1991. Over the course of his tenure, he has been instrumental in improving services for veterans in Collin County. He pushed for the opening of a new VA clinic, which opened its doors in Plano this year.  He has been recognized by his peers as the “most admired” Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives, received the inaugural Congressional Patriot Award and has received the National Patriot Award for his tireless work on behalf of the troops, veterans and freedom.

Prior to his tenure in congress, Johnson spent 29 years in the U.S. Air Force, where he flew combat missions in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He endured nearly seven years as a Prisoner of War, including 42 months in solitary confinement. He has been awarded two Silver Stars, two Legions of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, a Bronze Star with Valor, two Purple Hearts, four Air Medals and three Outstanding Unit Awards. He also served in the Texas state legislature.
