If you’re like the millions of Americans who resolved to lose weight and get healthy this year, the odds may be stacked against you. According to a recent study by the Statistic Brain Research Institute, only 37 percent of people in their 20s and 16 percent of people 50+ stuck to their fitness resolutions after two months. Don’t fret! You can increase your odds of success by taking a few simple steps.
We asked Body Machine Fitness (BMF) co-founder and president, Margaux Phoenix, to break down why fitness resolutions fail and how to find a workout program or gym near you that really gets results.
So what gives? Why is it so hard to keep working out?
According to Margaux, people ditch their fitness resolutions for three main reasons:
No. 1: Boredom
Does this sound familiar: It’s the New Year; you’re filled with positive vibes; you aspire to have a fit, healthy lifestyle; so you join a gym. After a couple of weeks, you end up doing the same class, same machines, same BORING routine – over and over again.
As Margaux explains, “Unfortunately, one of the biggest reasons people quit working out is because they simply get bored with their workout and dread going back to the gym. Eventually, they end up working out less and less, which means they don’t reach their fitness goals. Why keep working out if you’re not getting results?”
The solution? Keep mixing things up
First, find a local gym, boot camp or boutique fitness center – like Body Machine Fitness in Plano – that offers a variety of classes and lots of state-of-the-art fitness equipment. Next, ask how often the trainers change up their workouts. The more frequent, the better.
“At BMF, boredom isn’t an option. The workouts developed by our master trainer Ethan change every single day. They’re also high-energy and fun, because our in-house music producer/DJ customizes the music for each workout. This one-two punch keeps our clients pumped up and motivated session after session,” Margaux says.
No. 2: Not seeing results fast enough
We’ve all been there. We hit the gym, work our tails off, but don’t see – or feel – the results we expected. If you can relate, then you may be following the wrong exercise regimen.
The solution? Switch to an exercise program that includes HIIT (high-intensity interval training)
According to Margaux, HIIT workouts will accelerate fitness results and weight loss.
As she explains, “Extensive research has shown that if you want to lose fat (not muscle), speed up metabolism and improve conditioning, HIIT is the way to go. At BMF, our workouts go beyond exercise. We combine treadmill cardio intervals with strength training in a dark, cool environment, fueled with heart-pumping music and a custom, nightclub-style light show. This totally immersive experience drives the senses on multiple planes, which helps our clients focus AND achieve results faster.”

No. 3: Not seeking expert fitness advice
People often head to the gym without a plan or knowing how to work out effectively. On the flip side, experienced fitness trainers help their clients get on the right track, stay motivated and minimize injuries. But let’s face it, access to a trainer at traditional fitness centers is iffy at best, and hiring a personal trainer doesn’t come cheap.
The solution? Sample group exercise programs led by experienced, certified fitness trainers
“When we were making plans to open the BMF exercise studio in Plano, we knew hiring best-in-class talent would be key to our clients’ and our business’s success. If you love your trainer and their classes, you’ll keep coming back. Plus, whether they’re in our Transformation Room or enjoying a smoothie at the BMF Bar, our clients have access to a trainer from the moment they walk in the door until the time they leave,” explains Margaux.
