Children's Author Lauren Child

Calling all students who love to write! Explore Horizons is looking for you.

The UK-based chain of enrichment and tutoring centers has launched its annual Young Writers’ Awards and is seeking talented young North Texas writers 14 years old and younger to create an original story of up to 500 words using the theme of “The Mammoth Mash-up.”

Entry deadline is April 18 and students are asked to use two or more of their favorite genres such as a Science-Fiction and Western or a Drama and Comedy to create a story unlike anything else. Entries can be delivered to the nearest Explore Horizons center or submitted online at explore-horizons.com/YoungWriters.

The competition will be judged by Lauren Child, the award-winning author of best-selling series “Charlie and Lola” and “Rudy Redfort.” The winner, to be announced May 9, will receive a Kindle Fire HD and $500 worth of books for his or her school.

“As new technology continues to change the way we communicate, writing is becoming a lost art,” said Liz Wilson, head of curriculum at Explore Horizons. “We want to challenge students to get creative with their storytelling. We are excited to see the unique stories North Texas students decide to tell!”

Coinciding with the launch of the writing competition, Explore Horizons is hosting workshops at schools, libraries and other locations throughout North Texas to help students refine their writing skills.
